ABOUT MACHAME ROUTE

The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its challenging yet rewarding terrain, this route offers spectacular views, diverse landscapes, and a high success rate due to good acclimatization opportunities.
The trek begins at Machame Gate, winding through dense rainforest rich with wildlife before ascending into moorland and alpine desert zones. Climbers enjoy dramatic scenery as the route passes key landmarks such as Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and the iconic Barranco Wall, a thrilling but manageable scramble that is a highlight of the climb.
From Barranco Camp, the route continues through Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the final staging point before the midnight summit attempt. Climbers then push toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, arriving at sunrise for unforgettable views. The descent follows the Mweka Route, allowing for a safer and more comfortable return.
Typically completed in 6 or 7 days, the Machame Route is ideal for adventurous climbers who are physically fit and seeking a balance of challenge, stunning scenery, and strong acclimatization.
